State Senator Lorraine Inouye, the vice-chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, has long been involved in the rail project dating back to Governor Linda Lingle’s administration.
She was involved in the plan to help fund the project through a general excise tax increase and also believes it was a mistake to cancel the private-public partnership deal. She joined The Conversation to explain her position to finish the route to Ala Moana.

It could become permanent after the state Senate this week overwhelmingly approved an amendment on an unrelated bill to keep the 0.45-cent sales tax from rolling off the books as scheduled in 2025 in an effort to invest in Louisiana s crumbling infrastructure.
Republican Port Allen Sen. Rick Ward, chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, added the amendment, called a hitchhiker, onto a House bill to tax smokable marijuana when it s added to the state s medical cannabis program.
Louisiana s temporary sales tax is scheduled to roll off in 2025, but the state Senate wants to make it permanent and dedicate the revenue to infrastructure.
