Chula Vista asks Justice Department to audit its license plate reader program

Print The Chula Vista Police Department has requested an independent review by the California Department of Justice of its automated license plate reader program and is proposing to end data sharing with all federal agencies. Chula Vista City Council members are expected Tuesday to consider a list of changes the department wants to make ahead of a May expiration date for its annual subscription with program vendor Vigilant Solutions, which the department is seeking to renew. It is also looking to add two more plate reader systems that the council approved in July 2020, according to the city agenda report. The license plate readers, which Chula Vista began using in 2007, allow cameras mounted onto four police vehicles to take photographs of any license plate the cars drive by. Information such as the time, date and location, but not names or addresses, are logged. CVPD has allowed hundreds of policing agencies to access the data.

Living Coast Discovery Center reopening May 1

Print Living Coast Discovery Center in Chula Vista announced it is reopening to the public Saturday, May 1, after a year of uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the nature center is set to welcome guests back Saturdays and Sundays only. Limited private tour reservations will be available Monday through Friday, said Communications Manager Rachel Harper. Due to ongoing health-related restrictions, the nature center is set to reopen with limitations, such as asking guests health screening questions, requiring face masks and physical distancing. The reopening comes after pandemic-related shutdowns forced the center to close. With public visits and educational programmings, such as field trips, wildlife camps and animal feedings its main source of revenue, the closure placed the Chula Vista nonprofit in financial uncertainty, Executive Director Ben Vallejos told the Chula Vista City Council during a July 2020 meeting.

Millenia development is swapping retail for office space in Chula Vista

Chula Vista’s Millenia development is pivoting from retail to office space. Because of poor market conditions that saw a number of brick-and-mortar stores close in Chula Vista last year, Meridian Development plans to change what was originally anticipated to be retail space to office space. “What we are seeing in the shift of this plan, and because market conditions change, is really a shift from service industry jobs to professional jobs,” said Director of Development Eric Crockett. “Instead of having a focus on hotels and retail, this is now starting to shift to what we’ve all wanted to see, which is a major employment center, a professional office, and professional jobs in the South Bay,” he said.

(KGTV) — Chula Vista city leaders voted Tuesday to cap delivery fees apps charge small businesses and restaurants amid restrictions on indoor dining. Chula Vista City Council voted to cap delivery fees at 15% of the total purchase price and cap other related fees at no more than 3% of the total purchase price. The city says the vote was necessary to help support restaurants and businesses impacted by pandemic-related closures. Restaurants and food vendors have been some of the hardest-hit businesses in our community, said Councilmember Steve Padilla. This measure is a small but critical step to support many of our struggling small businesses trying to make ends meet.
