Susan “Susie” Jean Steiner, 70, passed away January 17, 2021, at Great Bend Health & Rehab. She was born August 26, 1950, in Ellsworth to Clayton C. & Barbara J. (Foote) Steiner. She lived the first three years of her life in Blackwolf, Kan.
After 1953, she was a resident of Great Bend. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, and was a member of the Altar Society.
She was a proud graduate of Great Bend High School in 1969. She was a member of the pep club and one of their first mainstream graduates of the special education program at GBHS. She loved Friday night GBHS football for many years and rarely missed a game. After she graduated from high school, she worked for Sunflower Diversified Services and was one of their original clients. Susan enjoyed working for the day services. Now that Katie Howell is the new director of retail operations at Sunflower Diversified Services, she is overseeing three separate entities within the non-profit agency.
These entities are The UPS Store, Westside Market and Beautiful Minds Art Studio. Each is located in the building at 5523 10th.
“This facility is a one-stop shop,” Howell said. “We can do anything from shipping packages and notarizing documents, to offering snacks, household items and best of all, the creations of Sunflower’s art students.”

Country music artist Jake Gill will kick off his Winter Jamz Concert Series with a free show at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, in the Barton County Courthouse square.
Gill will be joined at this event by St. John native Derek Staub, a rising star in the Midwest country music scene, and other Kansas musicians.

Denver Herren Richards, 61, passed away Dec. 30, 2020, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born Sept. 24, 1959, at Kingman, to Gary L. and Florence M. (Herren) Richards.
Denver was a employed at Sunflower Diversified Services, Inc., working as one Sunflower’s hose assembly specialists, winding and tying hoses for Flame Engineering out of LaCrosse, Kan. He also worked in Sunflower’s recycling operations for several years. He enjoyed lending his building skills to several of Sunflower’s wood construction projects, including pallets and dog houses. His love for working with tools was obvious over his 20 year career at Sunflower.

Once again, Barton County residents who party on New Year’s Eve will be able to get a ride home for as little as $5.
The New Year’s Eve Taxi will run from 10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, until 2 a.m. Friday, Jan. 1, taking people anywhere in Barton County for a minimum donation of $5 per person, said Christina Jimenez, transportation director for Sunflower Diversified Services.
