When you live in Northwestern Ontario you take advantage of every moment to enjoy the great outdoors, the adventures and the sites the region has to offer. There’s always something new and sometimes different to explore and learn about.
This past Sunday, Elaine Morris was out in the woods north of Dryden and found these peculiar…..things. Elaine snapped a picture of the ‘things’ which she jokingly titled to be ‘witches cauldrons’. Witches Cauldrons? Can you imagine if she was actually right?!? That would debunk the theory of the witches actually living south of Dryden.

Usually, I like to get an early-season walleye column done prior to the opening weekend but since I’m not at home right now I’m a little bit off on my important dates. This past Saturday was the third of the month of May, marking the annual re-opening of walleye season. It’s an important date for Sunset Country anglers because it marks the start of another open water season for many. It’s always been a day that I’ve looked forward to and participate in if I’m at home.
Early season walleye fishing is a little bit different than it is for the rest of the year. They spawn shortly after the ice goes out, most often in the back of the shallow bays wherever water is running into the lake. They’ll spawn around areas with strong current as well. These locations are often some migration from the traditional main lake basin areas where most will spend the summer, fall and winter.
