South Sudan s President establishes new 550-member transitional legislative national assembly

(Ecofin Agency) - South Sudanese President Salva Kiir (pictured) appointed members of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) on Monday, May 10, 2021. Composed of 550 members, the new parliament is included in the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement signed in 2018. The transitional government has the parliamentary majority with 332 members. It is followed by Riek Machar s Sudan People s Liberation Movement (SPLM-IO) with 128 members, then the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) with 50 members. Other political parties will be represented by 30 members and former detainees by 10 members.  As a reminder, the peace agreement first signed in 2015 and then revitalized in September 2018 aims to end the civil war that began in 2013. Its implementation started on Saturday, May 8, 2021, with the announcement by the president of the dissolution of the former parliament and the overhaul of the country s management system in the hope of maintaining peace.

Through a presidential decree read on state-run television, South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, Kiir appointed 550 lawmakers from all parties who signed the revitalized peace accord.   The appointment came two days after he dissolved the National Legislative Assembly and Council States. According to the peace deal, both R-TNLA and Council of States shall be reconstituted to include new appointees from other peace parties. The deal says TNLA will be expanded from 400 to 550 members, comprising representatives from the peace parties, where the former Transitional government will nominate 332 members, SPLM-IO will have 128, and South Sudan Opposition Alliance, 50. Other political parties shall have 30 representatives,
