Otters are taking over the brand new hot tub category on Twitch. No, actual otters.
The Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, funded by the Vancouver Aquarium, has been live streaming otters for some time now, amassing a (human) following of almost 30,000.
However, although the sleek beasts used to stream under the “Travel & Outdoors” tag, they’ve since switched to Twitch’s brand new “Pools, Hot Tubs, and Beaches” tag to increase their viewership.
The new tag was created in response to the recent “hot tub meta” debate that’s been taking over the platform, where streamers have been seen in swimwear in hot tubs chatting with followers.

Streaming platform Twitch has added over 350 new tags to help streamers label their content.
The tags are largely related to gender, race, nationality, sexual orientation, ability, and mental health. Twitch has also removed ally from the pre-existing LGBTQIA+ tag and given it a separate space.
Tags are used to showcase the type of stream or content, a creator s interests or beliefs, or to highlight a community that they re a part of. Tags also make it easier for viewers to browse and find a stream to watch based on their own interests.
The platform s trans community has been rallying for a trans tag since the feature launched back in 2018, but the company refused to add it over concerns of harassment.
Twitch s Hot Tub Streams Explained as Platform Introduces New Category for Videos
On 5/24/21 at 12:43 PM EDT
On May 21, popular streaming platform Twitch announced, and immediately introduced, a new genre section for the categorizing of streams titled: Pools, Hot Tubs and Beaches. The change may have been implemented with immediate effect, but the discussion surrounding the genre has been happening a long time.
Hot tub streams are exactly what they sound like. Twitch streamers broadcast live from their at-home hot tubs in swimwear, often simply talking to their audience, but occasionally doing activities like playing online chess.
Since 2020, hot tubs streams have risen in popularity, with streams racking up views and making creators some of the most-viewed on Twitch. Creators like Kaitlyn Amouranth Siragusa and Jenelle Indiefoxx Dagres are leaders in the genre. Amouranth even told Kotaku she can earn over $1000 a day while streaming directly from the tub.
