Microsoft announces fully 64-bit Visual Studio 2022
Developers waiting for news about the next installment of Visual Studio need wait no longer. Microsoft has announced that Visual Studio 2022 will be released later this summer as a public preview.
The company has also revealed that the software is going 64-bit, overcoming the limitations of the 32-bit edition. Microsoft says that the user experience will feel cleaner, more intelligent and action oriented, and that there is an increased cloud focus thanks to improved GitHub integration.

The switch to 64-bit is an important one, and sees Visual Studio finally catching up with modern computing. While it has long been possible to create 64-bit applications using the development suite, the software has, until now, itself been 32-bit software.

Microsoft has shipped preview 3 of its forthcoming .NET 6 framework with a bunch of updates including the addition of Windows desktop to its Multi-platform App UI (MAUI).
As the first long-term support version of the supposedly unified framework, .NET 6.0 is expected to be completed in November. Like .NET 5.0, it is no longer designated .NET Core, though it remains distinct from the Windows-only .NET Framework, which is still supported but will not be further developed.
.NET 6.0 has added Android, iOS, Mac and Windows ARM64 to the list of supported platforms, with mobile and Mac GUI support coming from the integration of Xamarin Forms. Although .NET 5.0 was released in November 2020, its short supported life means that .NET 6.0 may prove the more important release.

Introducing Microsoft .NET 6
Microsoft is unveiling its road map for the next major release of .NET, along with a first preview download. Thinkstock
With the release last year of .NET 5, Microsoft switched its platform development away from the 20-year-old .NET Framework to the newer, cross-platform, open source .NET Core. The .NET Framework has moved into maintenance mode, while the new .NET completes its separation from Windows release cycles with a new cadence of annual releases.
In that new cadence, .NET 5 is what’s referred to as a current supported release, with 2021’s .NET 6 intended to be the first long-term support version of the new platform. That gives .NET 6 three years of support, as opposed to .NET 5’s support which ends sometime early in 2022, three months after the .NET 6 release. You can think of current releases as pioneering new features for developers who produce regular updates, mainly for consumer applications. Long-term suppo
