Judith Collins week goes from bad to worse as National served up a smorgasbord of debacles, writes James Elliott The country was stricken by an icy shock wave this week. Plunging temperatures were attributed to a so-called “polar blast”, a conveyer belt of freezing southerlies apparently streaming north directly from Antarctica. I realise that it’s dangerous territory for a lay person to opine on meteorological matters but in this case the weather wizards were clearly wrong in attributing the freeze to a polar blast. It was obvious to any casual observer that the freeze was coming directly from the perpetual winter that is National’s caucus room.

RNZ s Susie Ferguson and Corin Dann narrowly beat Mike Hosking in latest radio results

Liz Brown/RNZ Corin Dann and Susie Ferguson host Morning Report on RNZ National. RNZ head of radio David Allan said the result was expected. He said RNZ National typically had a slower start to the year, as people opted to listen to music during the summer months. He said ZB had the benefit of “the heritage sports position”, which protected it from news fatigue over summer. “They did really well covering the America’s Cup campaign, and became a strong entertainment proposition over the last quarter. They are a good radio station, which has grown since Radio Sport turned off and its 180,000 audience was thrown into the open market,” he said.

The good old days at the YWCA

The good old days at the YWCA Fay Martin/The Oak Ridger The YWCA was the place to be in the old days. There were relaxing coffee times and just socializing with friends in the big room. Among the friends whom we think of enjoying coffee and fellowship in those days are Lee Crotinger, Louise Spray, Elaine Trauger, Anne Voelker, Barbara Becker, Rose Weaver, Cande Seay, Kathleen Stephens, Colleen Black and Becky Rushton. There were so many different programs that were available for one to enjoy. One popular program was the tour of local gardens. The Garden Tour Committee would select about four gardens and the owners would work on them to make them appealing to the public. On the tour day there would also be a luncheon. Several members helped with the preparations for the luncheon, and I remember Susie Ferguson having her husband, Rob, help with the decoration of the lunch boxes. It was a wonderful time touring the luxurious gardens and later enjoying the festive lunch.
