New estimate shows 126K more Kansans would enroll in Medicaid if expanded, but strong opposition remains | News, Sports, Jobs - Lawrence Journal-World: news, information, headlines and events in Lawrence, Kansas

TOPEKA New estimates of how many Kansans could gain coverage through Medicaid expansion are down from previous years, but researchers for the Kansas Health Institute say this is not surprising given the uncertainty of income throughout the year. The 2021 estimates by KHI indicate 126,000 Kansans, including nearly 88,000 adults, would newly enroll in KanCare, the state’s privatized version of Medicaid, if the program were expanded. Estimates use data compiled before COVID-19 and assume implementation on Jan. 1, 2022. The new figure is a drop-off from the 2020 estimate of 132,000 new enrollees, but Phillip Steiner, an analyst with KHI, said both federal policymaking and the program review process could be accounting for the lower number. Kansas Medicaid expansion faces steep climb after quick rejection in first 2021 debate

Kansas Medicaid expansion faces steep climb after quick rejection in first 2021 debate Katie Bernard, The Kansas City Star Mar. 3 TOPEKA Kansas Medicaid expansion was dealt another setback Wednesday in its first formal debate this year, as lawmakers signaled that the proposal, long a Democratic priority, was unlikely to go anywhere this session. Senate Minority Leader Dinah Sykes, a Lenexa Democrat, introduced expansion as an amendment to a bill that sought to create a certification and funding process for community mental health clinics. It also authorized out-of-state physicians to treat Kansans via telemedicine. Kansas is one of 12 states which has not expanded Medicaid since the Affordable Care Act went into effect in 2010. A provision of the act calls for the federal government to pick up 90 percent of the additional cost of expansion. Opponents call it too expensive while advocates say the state is missing out on federal funding and leaving thousands unin

As Kansas AG Schmidt weighs bid for governor, Republicans push him as check on Kelly

As Kansas AG Schmidt weighs bid for governor, Republicans push him as check on Kelly Jonathan Shorman, Katie Bernard, and Sydney Hoover, The Kansas City Star Mar. 3 TOPEKA Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, a Republican, has clashed repeatedly with Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly since she took office in 2019. They ve fought about a policy extending food assistance. They ve fought about the governor s power to set health rules for schools. They ve fought about COVID-19 gathering limits on religious services. But a year into the pandemic, Schmidt may soon challenge Kelly even more aggressively as he publicly weighs a run for governor. Republican lawmakers are advancing a bill that would require Kelly to submit to Schmidt any public health executive orders before they go into effect. Schmidt would have 24 hours to weigh the constitutionality of the order, giving him a powerful platform to critique Kelly s decisions during a potential campaign.
