Study: COVID-19 Survivors Might Only Need One Dose of Two-Dose Vaccine

By City News Service Apr 1, 2021 LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A single dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for people who have already had COVID-19 generates an immunologic response similar to that in people who receive the two-dose recommended sequence, according to a study released today by researchers at Cedars-Sinai. The study suggests that the second dose may not be needed for people who have successfully recovered from a prior coronavirus infection, according to Dr. Susan Cheng, an associate professor of cardiology and director of Public Health Research at the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai. “Our findings extend those from smaller studies reported elsewhere and support a potential strategy of providing a single dose of vaccine to persons with a confirmed prior history of coronavirus infection, along with two doses for people not previously infected, Cheng said. “This approach could maximize the reach of a limited vaccine supply, allowing potentially millions more people

Heart-healthy lifestyles linked to lower risk of future cancers

E-Mail BOSTON - In addition to lowering risk of heart disease, maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle may pay off in lower risk for developing cancer, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and other centers in the United States and the Netherlands have found. Looking at the potential link between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer among participants in two large population-based health studies, Emily S. Lau, MD, and Jennifer E. Ho, MD, from the division of Cardiology at MGH and their co-authors found that traditional risk factors for CVD, including older age, male sex, and current or former smoking were all independently associated with increased risk of the development of cancer.

Why women should monitor blood pressure differently, according to a new study

Why women should monitor blood pressure differently, according to a new study CDC / Amanda Mills A nurse taking a woman s blood pressure. When you visit the doctor, often the first order of business is wrapping a blood pressure cuff around your arm and looking to the display screen for the magic number. What’s that number, you ask? Less than 120 over 80, or 120/80, measured in millimeters per mercury, is what has long been understood as within the healthy range until now. If you’re a woman, doctors may have been using the wrong metric for your blood pressure all along, according to a new study published February 15 in the journal Circulation.
