Santa Maria District, Local Leaders Talk Future of Schools
A virtual event last week hosted the superintendent, the local chamber president and others to discuss how schooling has changed, lessons from the past year and the need to invest in internships and summer programs.

Shutterstock (TNS) Local education and chamber officials joined forces for a State of Education event last week to discuss how the pandemic altered the entire educational landscape, what lies ahead for schools and ways local businesses can get involved.
The virtual event Wednesday featured reflections from county Superintendent of Schools Susan Salcido and Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Glenn Morris. The discussion revolved around how teachers, parents and students have adapted since March 2020 and a new partnership between the chamber and education office.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - The Santa Barbara County Board of Education has named the county s 2022 Teacher of the Year.
Alisyn Blanton, a fifth-grade teacher at Miguelito Elementary School in the Lompoc Unified School District was the recipient of this prestigious award. She is now eligible for the state and national Teacher of the Year recognition programs.
“Alisyn is a gifted educator who shares her love of learning throughout her classroom and school community. She is committed to educational excellence and demonstrates her passion, skill, and dedication with energy and fervor,” said Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Susan Salcido. “Teachers like Alisyn inspire students to learn, grow, achieve, and succeed.”

The 20th annual Battle of the Books was held online
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - This year’s annual Santa Barbara County Battle of the Books competition was held online. Over 140 students from grade levels 4th through 6th competed in the competition.
The team co-champions this year are the Master of the Books and the Lightning Readers who received Battle of the Books t-shirts and books that will be included in next year s competition. Coming in third place was The Dragon Readers.
Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Susan Salcido said, “We would like to commend our participants for their perseverance and preparation for this exciting competition. The students demonstrated exceptional teamwork and collaboration during this literary battle.”
