UK challenge trial will infect volunteers with Covid-19 to test vaccines

Getty Images Finding the best ways to do good. A group of daring volunteers will soon become infected with Covid-19 on purpose. They’re young. They’re healthy. And they want scientists to give them a candidate vaccine and then deliberately expose them to the coronavirus, so we can all find out faster whether the vaccine is effective. This is called a human challenge trial, and it’s set to kick off in the UK within a month, now that an ethics board has given it the necessary approval. Scientists have run such trials in the past for influenza, malaria, typhoid, dengue, and cholera, but this will be the world’s first for Covid-19.

Complicated Family Stories Are Explored in The Braid’s New Salon Show ‘Family Matters’ Jasmine Curry and Rick Zieff Complex family relationships are the theme of a new salon show by The Braid, formerly Jewish Women’s Theatre. Opening on March 6, community theatergoers will have the chance to see this show, titled, “Family Matters,” virtually across the globe on Zoom. “Family Matters” is the latest family-focused salon show that showcases stories, songs, videos and short plays. The Braid’s artistic director Ronda Spinak told the Journal in a statement that family roots provide the perfect backdrop for the virtual performace.

People lost to the epidemic come from many demographics, but there is one particular group whose specific experience in the HIV/AIDS epidemic has molded my own advocacy: Black queer men. Black queer men have revolutionized the United States health care system through theory, literature, policy, leadership development, operational development, and more even though our efforts are often overlooked. To counteract that, I want to use this piece to speak about several Black queer males who have inspired me and strengthened my efforts to address HIV/AIDS and to change our health care system.
