YOKOHAMA Two men in Kanagawa Prefecture who died of COVID-19 were confirmed to have been infected with variant strains of the coronavirus, the prefecture announced on March 16.
According to the Kanagawa Prefectural Government, the two cases are the first coronavirus variant deaths in Japan.
The men, one in his 50s and the other in his 70s, reportedly died of pneumonia, and it was confirmed only after their deaths that they had been infected with coronavirus variants. The prefectural government has sent samples to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases to investigate which countries the variants contracted by the men came from.

Many people in Tokyo and surrounding areas have taken to social media to report seeing what appeared to be a fireball shooting across the night sky.
Eyewitnesses posted about the phenomenon that was observed shortly after 3 a.m. on Sunday across the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo.
A video taken by an NHK camera in the capital s Shinjuku Ward shows a ball of light streaking from the upper middle of the screen to the lower left.
Another NHK camera in Tokyo s Chuo Ward captured similar footage, and the light is seen reflected on the surface of water.

TOKYO The Tokyo Fire Department held a simultaneous spraying of water using eight vessels including fireboats off Harumi Wharf in the capital s Chuo Ward on March 7, to call for fire prevention and to cheer on medical workers and others tackling the coronavirus pandemic.
The Kobe City Fire Department called on a simultaneous discharge of water for firefighting day on March 7, and about 20 fire departments across the country took part in the event.
