COVID-19: Noxious smells, taste another side effect called parosmia

MACKINAW – Everyone by now knows that COVID-19 can cause a loss of taste and smell, but fewer know that it can also make things smell and taste really, really bad.  Mackinaw resident Shelly Shore Forrest is hoping to get the word out to others who may be suffering with the strange symptom, which is called parosmia. It can be a distressing surprise.  “I picked up my device and Googled, so I found out pretty quickly that I wasn’t alone and wasn’t crazy, said Forrest. “There were all these other people having this experience, but most of us feel like there was no warning, no heads up, like ‘Hey, this might happen.” Nobody tells us it’s gonna turn into this terrible thing.”

When COVID Kills Your Taste and Smell | Everyday Health

Medically Reviewed More than 90 percent of COVID-19 patients lose their sense of taste and smell at least temporarily. iStock; Everyday Health Wedding cake designer Todd Kennedy had no idea what lay ahead when he came down with COVID-19 in March 2020. His symptoms were relatively mild  soar throat, fatigue, a heavy feeling in his chest. Plus, to his dismay, he lost his ability to taste and smell. Almost a year later, his taste buds still aren’t functioning, he says, though his sense of smell is slowly coming back. “Everyone takes for granted things like taste and smell,” says Kennedy, 42, who runs the New York City–based Todd Kennedy Cakes. But in the aftermath of COVID-19, he adds, “the simple pleasures are gone.”
