Pelevin cleared customs in Opua, where he passed a Covid-19 test, and because he was at sea for more than two weeks he was granted entry into the country without having to go through managed isolation. On Christmas Day, mostly fine and warm weather is expected across northern and central parts of the country. But southerlies from the Tasman Sea will bring cooler winds and showers, especially to eastern regions of the South Island.

Gisborne in restricted fire season

Gisborne in restricted fire season © RNZ / Tracy Neal Anyone who wants to light an outdoor fire in the Gisborne / Tairāwhiti area will now need to apply for a permit. Principal Rural Fire Officer Ray Dever said it has been hot and bone dry. Recent hot conditions have meant it s very dry in Tairāwhiti. There is a lot of dry vegetation around which, when combined with the heat, could cause a fire to spread very quickly. It s important anyone in Tairāwhiti, residents or visitors, follow the fire season. Apply for a permit if you want to light an outdoor fire. If you have a permit, follow the conditions listed on it, he said.
