As boaters return to the waters this summer, San Juan County’s Environmental Resources Division is reminding people how they can help to protect Southern Resident Orcas during Orca Action Month this June.
Laws and guidelines recommend giving space and going slow near orcas, remaining clear of critical feeding areas, using whale warning flags to alert other boaters of orcas’ presence, and refraining from fishing near orcas or passing between them and the shoreline.
