Columbia, South Carolina - A federal grand jury has returned a 147-count superseding indictment against 40 defendants across South Carolina in the largest federal racketeering conspiracy in South Carolina history.
The indictment alleges a sprawling criminal enterprise whereby inmates with the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC), often through the use of contraband cell phones, orchestrated murder, kidnapping, firearms distribution, and an international drug operation.
The grand jury returned an indictment charging the defendants with conspiracy under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, and several charges under the Violent Crimes in Aid of Racketeering (VICAR) statute. GREENWOOD, S.C. The 8th Circuit Solicitor’s Office allows people to donate toys for their Christmas toy drive and receive community service hours in return.
According to the office, the annual toy donation has happened over several decades and spanned three Solicitors.
“This is truly my favorite time of year at work,” said 8th Circuit Pre-Trial Intervention Director Dale Allen. “I have the best seat in the house because I get to see not only the joy of those receiving the gifts, but also the joy of those giving the gifts.”

Forty defendants – ranging in age from 21 to 62 face a 147-count indictment in what federal authorities on Thursday called “the largest federal racketeering case in South Carolina history,” according to a report.
Charges brought by a federal grand jury against the defendants include murder, kidnapping, firearms distribution and drug trafficking, the office of U.S. Attorney Peter McCoy announced in Columbia, S.C., FOX Carolina of Greenville, S.C., reported.
The inmates often used contraband cell phones to order the crimes from inside the state’s corrections facilities on behalf of a gang called the Insane Gangster Disciples, acting assistant attorney general Brian Rabbitt of the Justice Department’s criminal division said in a statement, according to the report.
