After 20 years of speculation, Paul Flores charged with the murder of Kristin Smart

After over two decades of speculation, investigation and heartbreak, two suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the 1996 disappearance and murder of Cal Poly student Kristin Smart.
Paul Flores, once Smart s classmate, has long been the only suspect in the case. According to jail records, he was arrested Tuesday in San Pedro and charged with murder. His father Ruben Flores, 80, was arrested at his residence in Arroyo Grande and has been charged with accessory to a felony. His bond was set at $250,000, while Paul Flores is being held without bail.

Paul Flores and his father Ruben Flores have reportedly been taken into custody in connection with the 1996 disappearance of Cal Poly student Kristin Smart. The news was first reported by KSBY. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff s Office said it will be holding a press conference to announce a major development in the case at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

They were headed for the neighborhoods of apartment complexes and overpopulated “Animal House -like bungalows that border the campus. They were looking for a party.
It was Memorial Day weekend. Kristin’s first year away at college was coming to a close. The 19-year-old from Stockton would have considered that something to celebrate. As far back as February, she’d written to another student that “school seems like it is never going to end.”

12:36 a.m. A caller from a business on the 100 block of West Main Street reported a female subject threatening to beat them up and causing a scene because the reporting party would not serve her.
10:29 a.m. A caller from Presley Way and East Main Street reported three juveniles on skateboards and bicycles causing traffic hazards.
1:45 p.m. A caller from a business on the 600 block of Freeman lane reported a theft of approximately $400 worth of products.
4:33 p.m. A caller from the 1700 block of East Main Street reported vandalism.
4:55 p.m. A caller from Highway 49 and West McKnight Way reported a reckless driver almost ran them off the road.
