Mumbai: Finally wait is over. Almost 17 months after the former MP Milind Deora resigned following party s rout in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress high command on Saturday appointed a trade union leader and legislator Prakash alias Bhai Jagtap (66) as new president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC).
After Deora s resignation, former MP and veteran leader Eknath Gaikwad (80)was appointed MRCC s executive president and the chorus was rising within the party for a full time President to rebuild the party organization ahead of elections to the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) slated for 2022.

A faction-ridden Congress on Saturday decided not to project a single face ahead of the crucial 2022 civic polls to lead the party in Mumbai.
While naming sitting party legislator Ashok (Bhai) Jagtap, a Marathi face, as the president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) on Saturday, the All India Congress Committee appointed former Mumbai Youth Congress president and ex-legislator Charan Singh Sapra as the working president of the Mumbai unit.

For the first time in 135 years, Congress party has adopted the new idea of conducting an opinion poll among its office bearers to choose the next Mumbai president for the party. The exercise seems to be fruitful as Congress has got seven names for the coveted post, which has been lying vacant for one and a half years.
HK Patil, the All-India Congress Committee General Secretary and in-charge of Maharashtra mooted an idea to seek an opinion from the party s ground level office bearers before choosing the new Mumbai president. Last week, he sent out messages to around 500 block presidents and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) members informing them about the idea.
