Here are a few of my favorites, chosen because they have fewer crowds and less traffic and include a mix of activities and attractions that appeal to many ages and tastes. I visited these places on sponsored press trips but the opinions are mine alone. Pro Tip: You don’t save time or encounter less traffic taking the bypasses around Atlanta. They have built up so much that traffic is worse on them. Tough it out and go straight through.

First gun club targets paroquets, pigeons, rabbits Invercargill’s first gun club was formed on April 2 1878 and the first shoot was held at Gladstone on May 10 that year. The club had advertised for paroquets and pigeons to shoot. The paroquets would have been Red-crowned parakeets, then quite numerous, and the pigeons were brought over from Melbourne, but as they were used up rapidly, there were never enough of them. The Southland Times reported on the first match “The few birds were eked out with rabbits, which, however, afforded very poor sport. ‘’In every instance they refused to run when the traps were pulled, and necessitated the intervention of a crowd of amateur beaters, to the number of about 50, from the neighboring school.”
