Gold diggers and rent seekers strip Tanzania's wealth

Gold accounts for a sizeable portion of Tanzania’s export earnings, overtaking tourism in 2020 as the country’s biggest foreign exchange earner. Yet year after year, the Tanzanian government loses massive amounts of gold through smuggling by transnational criminal networks. Instead of enriching criminals, both in and outside the country, this money could be helping to improve the daily lives of ordinary Tanzanians. Ongoing infrastructure projects such as the standard gauge railway, berths and roads and services such as water and electricity connections could all use a cash injection.

Ghana's RTI Commission rules on its first ever petition

4 minute read Excavators work on a small-scale mining site near Dunkwa-on-Offin, central Ghana, 16 June 2013, Chris Stein/AFP via Getty Images In a landmark decision Ghana s Right to Information Commission ordered an information request by journalist Evans Aziamor-Mensah be granted at a cost of US$0.33 and not the US$1,000 initially quoted by the Minerals Commission. This statement was originally published on mfwa.org on 21 July 2021. Ghana’s Right to Information (RTI) Commission has delivered what many consider as a milestone decision that signals the Commission’s commitment to ensure an effective implementation of the country’s new RTI law (RTI Act, 2019, Act 989).
