Comments The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) says it is probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a 33-year-old woman in Lamontville, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday.  News24 reported earlier that the woman is believed to have been shot during an exchange of fire between police and gunmen Police had descended on Madlala informal settlement to search for goods looted during the recent wave of unrest in the province. According to IPID, residents allegedly then mobilised and blocked exit points with stones, cut the tyres of a police vehicle, and attacked officers. The police allegedly fired warning shots and the woman was later found dead behind one of the shacks, metres away from the road where the police were stationed with [a] gunshot wound in her body, the directorate said.

The police have been inadequate during the recent unrest in KZN and Gauteng, according to experts. They say SAPS needs to be decentralised to municipalities and metros.  They also say Cyril Ramaphosa needs to clean out the political appointments when reforming the security sector. SAPS needs to be reformed and decentralised following the recent wave of unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. According to the Institute for Security Studies Dr Jakkie Cilliers, policing should be decentralised to provincial, metropolitan and municipality levels, and detectives empowered. Cilliers added that President Cyril Ramaphosa needs to start taking the security sector seriously .  He needs to engage in it. He needs to clean it out of the political appointments that have been made.

It s understood police officers descended on the area to search for goods looted during the unrest. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the incident.  Meanwhile, in another incident, police clashed with a group near the Umsunduzi police station in Cato Ridge, west of Durban.  Police sources, with knowledge of the incident, who spoke to News24 on condition of anonymity, said another operation to recover looted goods went awry when the community fought back.  In the fray, roads were blocked to prevent police from leaving, and two officers were injured in the battle. A woman, a civilian, was purportedly wounded.

Lamontville woman shot dead by police confiscating looted goods Updated Nokukhanya N Mntambo Share this: A 33-year-old woman was shot and killed in Lamontville, south of Durban, on Thursday during a confrontation between police and the local community. Police officers were in Madlala informal settlement raiding the area for looted goods from the recent unrest.  It is alleged the community members mobilised each other and blocked the exit points with rocks before slashing the tyres of the police vehicle. It is also alleged they then attacked the officers who retaliated by firing warning shots to disperse the hostile crowd.  One of the shots is believed to have struck the 33-year-old.
