Cuyahoga County Council member Shontel Brown will win the Democratic special primary in Ohio’s 11th Congressional District, CNN projects.
Brown’s defeat of Nina Turner, the former state senator and close ally of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, is a flexing of the Democratic establishment’s muscle, after South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn and the Congressional Black Caucus stepped in to campaign for Brown.
Turner conceded to Brown Tuesday night.
“Tonight my friends, we have looked across the promised land, but for this campaign, on this night, we will not cross the river,” Turner said.

COLUMBUS, OHIO Mike Carey, a coal lobbyist backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, beat a bevy of Republicans in central Ohio, while Cuyahoga County Council member Shontel Brown pulled out a victory for the Democratic establishment in Cleveland, in a pair of primary elections for open House seats Tuesday. The special elections were both viewed as a measure of voters influences, though low turnout and huge candidate fields complicated interpreting the results too broadly. In both races, party leaders showed they still held sway. Carey s race reinforced Trump s status as GOP kingmaker, particularly after the former president s preferred candidate in Texas special election lost last week. Brown s win over progressive Nina Turner handed another blow to a liberal wing that has been challenging the Democratic old guard with a more confrontational style.
Shontel Brown defeated Nina Turner on Tuesday in Ohio s 11th Congressional District Democratic primary.
Brown, a Cuyahoga County Council member, was backed by Democratic establishment figures like Hillary Clinton and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.). Turner, a former state senator and co-chair of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign, was endorsed by progressives, including Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). Turner went into the primary with more name recognition,
Politico reports, and in May internal campaign polling was showing her with 50 percent of the vote. She has conceded, telling supporters, On this night, we will not cross the river.
