Stolen vehicle recovered, firearm seized

Police recovered a stolen vehicle, seized a firearm and arrested a male suspect Saturday morning. Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Uniform Patrol Branch were in the area of McLaughlin Street just after 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 1 when they observed a vehicle that had been reported as stolen. The black pickup truck was parked on McLaughlin Street when officers spotted it. Police learned the accused male, who was inside the vehicle, was believed to be in possession of a firearm. When officers approached the vehicle, the male initially reached into the back seat of the truck for unknown reasons. Despite this, officers were able to complete their arrest without further incident.

City police say it was late Friday morning when they were called to the Dollarama store on Edward Street for a weapons call. They found the suspect had pointed a gun at staff, made threats, and then took off. Police soon found him, adding he had stolen store merchandise. Not long after, they say they found a fake gun believed to be the one used in the robbery. The suspect was in bail court, and remains in custody. • Assault With a Weapon x 2

Police spot suspected impaired driver, find and seize handgun and cocaine

Police located a loaded handgun and a quantity of suspected cocaine after conducting a traffic stop for an apparent impaired driver Saturday evening. Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Uniform Patrol Branch were in the area of the 400 block of North Court Street just after 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9 when they observed a motorist driving in a manner that led police to suspect they were impaired. After observing more erratic driving, officers conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block of Fort William Road. When officers approached the driver they observed several signs of impairment. As a result, police conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test, the results of which led police to suspect the motorist was impaired. Further evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert confirmed she was impaired by drug.

The officer observed the motorist travelling at a high rate of speed and ignoring stop signs. The officer also observed signs the motorist may have been impaired. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Edward Street near Redwood Avenue, but the motorist ignored them and continued.
