The latest upgrade of the 412 announced in 2018, the Subaru Bell 412EPX was jointly developed by Subaru and Bell as the platform for the new utility helicopter for the Japan Ministry of Defense program.
Japan’s national police has taken delivery of the first production Subaru Bell 412EPX, three years after the upgraded medium-twin helicopter was announced. Bell and Subaru jointly developed the 412EPX as the platform for the new utility helicopter for the Japan Ministry of Defense (JMOD) program. JMOD began testing the aircraft in 2019.
The 412EPX features a more robust main rotor gearbox with 30-minute run dry capability, an increased internal maximum gross weight of 12,200 pounds, and mast torque output of plus 11 percent at speeds below 60 knots. It has a maximum cruising speed of 122 knots and a maximum range of 357 nm. Subaru Corporation has announced the delivery of its Subaru Bell 412EPX helicopter to Japan’s National Policy Agency. This marks the world’s first delivery of the Subaru Bell 412EPX, the latest upgrade of the renowned Bell 412 series jointly developed by Subaru and Bell, a Textron Inc. company. The helicopter will be used by the Iwate Prefectural Police in its mission to serve the local community after pilot and maintenance training have been completed at Subaru’s Aerospace Company’s Utsunomiya Plant.

Subaru and Bell jointly developed the 412EPX, which is the basis of the UH-2J for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.
“The Subaru Bell 412EPX is designed to operate in demanding weather conditions and is built to support policing, firefighting, and disaster prevention and response missions for countries around the world,” says Subaru.
In June 2019, Subaru and Bell announced that the Japan National Police Agency would be the launch customer for the new rotorcraft.

Astronautics Corporation of America, in partnership with Central American Aviation Services (CAAS), located in Guatemala City, has completed the first Bell 212 glass cockpit upgrade for the Guatemalan Air Force with its Badger Pro+ Integrated Flight Display System.
The Astronautics upgrade consists of four 6×8-inch high-resolution displays, a control panel, and an engine data concentrator unit. The retrofit transforms the legacy cockpit from its steam gauges to a digital, full-glass cockpit, replacing primary flight displays and engine instruments with the same Badger Pro+ Integrated Flight Display System flying on new production Bell helicopters.
