2022 Subaru Solterra – but it
won t be coming to Australia for the immediate future.
Given its official name overnight, the Solterra will launch in Japan, the US, Canada, Europe and China in the first half of 2022 – but Australia won t represent one of those launch markets, with Subaru s local arm citing a
lack of a production slot for our market. The Subaru factory in Japan confirms there is no timeline for the electric Solterra vehicle for Australia. However, future electric projects form part of ongoing dialogue between Subaru Australia and the factory , said a Subaru Australia spokesperson.
That s despite the Solterra s twin under the skin, the Toyota BZ4X, being confirmed for Australian showrooms, with both SUVs riding on the same co-developed, electric-only platform, branded by Subaru as the e-Subaru Global Platform (e-SGP).
Subaru says the Solterra will compete in the cutthroat C-segment class of SUVs, meaning it’ll go toe-to-toe with the likes of Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4, not to mention its own Forester. Plans call for several different types of EVs to be created from this platform, since it can combine multiple modules and components such as the front, center and rear of a vehicle. Giving new meaning to ‘plug-n-play’, this type of modular ability should permit quicker rollout of new models – in theory, anyway.
In addition to sitting on the leading edge of electrification, Subaru also says they are aiming to realize superior passive safety and vehicle stability, a drum the company has been beating to some degree of success. Its EyeSight suite of safety technology has made its way into just about every vehicle in their lineup, save for the remaining few with three pedals.
