Arnab Goswami phone use: Alibaug jailer suspended | Mumbai News

PUNE: The state prisons department on Saturday suspended superintendent of Alibaug district jail Ambadas Patil after he was indicted in a departmental inquiry for allowing Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami to use his cell phone on the night of November 5, 2020. Additional director-general (prisons) Sunil Ramanand told TOI, “An inquiry by Arthur Road central jail superintendent revealed that Patil unlawfully gave his phone to Goswami when he was at the makeshift quarantine centre at Alibaug civic school for communication with an outsider.” Ramanand said, “The inquiry officer relied on the statement of a jail guard, who had seen Patil handing over his phone to Goswami, for communicating with an outsider for more than two minutes. Patil’s call data records and personal details of the caller show that a call was made from his phone late that night.”

The initiative was launched via an online event. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other top officials were physically present at the Yerawada jail. During the launch event, Uddhav Thackeray spoke about several freedom fighters who spent a jail term in the Yerwada jail in Pune. He also remembered the day when he used to visit the jail with his mother when his father late Balasaheb Thackeray was imprisoned here.

Additional Director General of Police (Jails) Sunil Ramanand, who heads the jails department, said, “When we drew up our plans, we realised that the five-acre space is limited and we need five more acres so that we can build a large jail for undertrials keeping in mind the crime rate in Mumbai. We want to construct a jail for 5,000 inmates. There is enough land at Turbhe Mandale, and the government is considering our demand.’’
