The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Disability League on Wednesday jumped to the defense of Suna East MP Junet Mohammed who claimed that Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura ‘bleached’ his skin to represent People Living with Disabilities (PWDs) in parliament.
Through a statement signed by ODM Disability League president Nikson Kakiri, the group noted that Junet’s sentiments were not targeted at PWDs but at Mwaura as a person.
“Junet’s comment was purely an individual against an individual without targeting a group of people or community as being potrayed.
“It is important to note that in a political context the comment was attributed to the fact that the target instigated violence which brought a security threat to PWDs’ political participation,” read the statement in part.

People living with disabilities have condemned the remarks by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed (
pictured) against nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura.
In a statement to the newsrooms on Sunday, the lobby termed the remarks discriminatory and said attacks on the basis of disability were attacks on all persons with disabilities.
“Persons with albinism are human beings who are created in the image and likeness of God and therefore deserve respect, honor and dignity just like any other Kenyan,” the lobby said.
The group called upon the MP to withdraw the remarks and apologise to the nominated senator who is also facing disciplinary action by the Jubilee Party.

There was drama during the recent burial of former MP Zablon Owigo Olang’ in Migori when someone took off with the official seat of Governor Okoth Obado.
The governor’s handlers had strategically placed the seat next to ODM leader’s Raila Odinga. However, another chair was sneaked in at the same spot where the governor’s was.
This happened before the burial began and as Obado walked to the venue, he was surprised to find his initial seat was not there.

The Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has cleared the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) draft bill following a successful verification exercise.
The Commission has in writing submitted a copy of the bill to all 47 County Assemblies, for debate.
IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati says the bill has been supported by at least 1.14 million registered voters, a necessary requirement to enable the bill proceed to the next stage.
“The Commission, through interim verification of data captured as of January 19, 2021, has confirmed and is satisfied that the Initiative has been supported by 1,140,845 registered voters,” Chebukati said.
This followed orders issued by the High Court on Monday temporarily suspending any planned swearing in of Ms Mwenda as governor.
ODM Director of Elections Mr Junet Mohammed said the party’s central committee will sit on Wednesday to settle on a nominee to present for the deputy governor position for Nairobi County.
Members of the committee already received their invitation to the meeting by the party’s Executive Director Oduor Ong’wen.
“Dear member, notice is here given of a meeting of the Central Committee to be held on Wednesday January 20, 2021 at 9.00 a.m. Venue will be communicated later,” read the communication.
