Study Forcasts NC s Wind Energy Potential | Coastal Review Online

The installation of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind pilot turbines are now complete. Photo: Dominion Energy RALEIGH – The state is well positioned to attract a significant portion of the growing offshore wind energy industry, according to a report released Wednesday by the North Carolina Department of Commerce. The report by BVG Associates, a consulting company with extensive wind energy experience, and N.C. State’s Clean Energy Technology Center, forecasts East Coast offshore capacity exceeding 40 gigawatts by 2035. North Carolina stands to benefit from a more than $100 billion market opportunity, officials said. The forecast includes industry investment of $140 billion in supply chain, equipment and operational costs related to wind facilities. The report finds that North Carolina manufacturers can address and supply equipment for the entire East Coast market, not just for projects directly off the state’s coast.

New Year, Same Solar Net Metering Battles

Net metering battles have surged in recent years. As 2021 begins, the same old fights are ongoing. January 12, 2021 Russell Schiermeier graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in mechanical engineering. But a decade ago, he bought a few hundred acres near the Snake River in Idaho’s high desert and began to farm. In the years since, his farm has grown to encompass more than 3,000 acres with crops such as alfalfa, corn and peppermint, and Schiermeier has experimented with carbon sequestration and cover cropping. Two years ago, Schiermeier installed solar panels to power the irrigation pumps that provide essential water to his crops. “That’s kind of the rub in Idaho. We’ve got such a wonderful growing season.but we just don’t have any water,” he said.
