The Old West must not have been a very nice place. In the opening scenes of The Ballad of Little Jo, a young woman is discovering this for herself. Cast out by her wrathful family after giving birth out of wedlock, Little Jo has escaped to the West like to many pariahs before her. But her dress, bonnet and parasol are like red flags to the cowboys along the trail, who can guess she ain t no schoolmarm. Abused and mistreated, she accepts a ride from a stranger and finds herself sold into bondage. Escaping, she realizes there is only one course for her.
Households like this exist only in the movies, which is all right, because that s one of the reasons we go to the movies: To see people who are crazier than we are. The Odom family, the subjects of Bruce Beresford s Rich in Love, lives in an elegant old Southern mansion, surrounded by balconies and trees and easy livin . Life is seemingly without problems, until one day Warren Odom (Albert Finney) comes home and discovers that his wife has left him.
He reads her farewell note incredulously, little suspecting it was rewritten by his peppy teenage daughter Lucille (Kathryn Erbe). She didn t change the content much; she just thought it could have been better phrased. Lucille, who is the narrator of the story, is a free spirit who must have come late in life to the Odoms, since Warren is retired and spends all day at home - one of the reasons his wife (Jill Clayburgh) moved out.

Alicia Coombs is an archivist and the head of business affairs for the American Genre Film Archive in Austin, Texas. Outside of watching and collecting movies, she likes to drink coffee, read about cults, and turn down plans so she can hang out with her cats instead.
Greg Carlson: How did you get into movies?
Alicia Coombs: I was raised to love movies. There are a lot of collectors in my family. My uncle, who I am really close to, is a collector. The beginning of my collection started with hand-me-downs. My family and I are indoor people we’re not going on many ski trips.
