WB stresses on BMU to monitor Sindh barrages, Indus River July 19, 2021 SUKKUR: World Bank Task Team leader Francois Onimous has emphasized on establishment of a barrage management unit which will repair, maintain and operate Guddu, Sukkur and Kotri barrages. Besides, the unit will also monitor the water level in the Indus River. Presiding over the virtual meeting to review the progress of Sindh Barrages Improvement Project, Francois Onimous said that the water-level fluctuation at three barrages – Guddo, Sukkur and Kotri barrages - is critical to safety of barrage structures and proper water distribution. Therefore, a mechanism should be evolved for maintaining water-level on these barrages.

Every monsoon season brings painful memories for many residents of the upper-Sindh districts. Kashmore-Kandhkot, a small district, is one of them. If one talks about Pakistan’s super floods in 2010, it reminds the residents of the massive breach in the mighty Indus river in Kashmore that occurred downstream of the Guddu barrage. Eleven years back the gushing waters of the Indus river breached Tori dyke in the Kandhkot taluka of the district on the night of August 6th, spelling disasters not only for Kashmore but other districts which were located on the right bank of Indus. Devastations caused by the single breach until Aug 27, 2010, when the second breach occurred at Kot Almo, Thatta caused large scale displacements of people from flood-affected districts and riverine areas after floodwaters touched two banks. Deaths and damages to properties were reported.

Progress of replacing gates at Sukkur Barrage reviewed July 15, 2021 SUKKUR: A team of Sindh Barrages Improvement Project (SBIP) visited the Sukkur Barrage for the supervision of the replacement process of its six gates. Project Director Ghulam Mohiuddin Mughal along with his team visited the Sukkur Barrage ahead of replacement of its six gates to enhance the controlled release of water. The consultants briefed the visiting team that gates 39 and 40 needed to be replaced, while 35 was being renovated. Furthermore, gates 31, 32 and 34 are being fabricated at Karachi Engineering Shipyard Company. The PD SBIP also briefed the consultants that gate numbers 39 and 40 were also not functioning properly due to some mechanical issue.
