Japan’s ‘Values Diplomacy’ Runs Aground in Myanmar

The Myanmar military’s unconstitutional coup d’etat to derail democracy, and subsequent killing of peaceful pro-democracy protesters, is awkward for Japan’s so-called values diplomacy. Aside from some mild diplomatic handwringing, Tokyo has confirmed that promoting values is not a priority in Myanmar and that it is not willing to sacrifice anything to protect or promote them. The pandemic has led artists to find different ways to bring their music to audiences, and for their debut appearance on the long-running “MTV Unplugged” series, the K-pop septet of BTS RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook transformed their stadium-filling showmanship into something more intimate.
Opening the show inside a game room set filled with vintage arcade games and retro MTV logos, BTS began with “Telepathy,” a standout from their latest album “Be,” marking the first live performance of the track. While the pandemic has forced many bandmembers to perform from separate locations or in makeshift sets and stages, all seven of the BTS members’ vocals were on full display for the performance.

BTS has been very vocal about their appreciation towards their fans and even credited them as among the primary reasons behind their global success. In return, the septet has been working so hard to please their fans through their music and performances.

BTS Finally Appears on MTV Unplugged
On Wednesday, Feb. 24, BTS performed a myriad of songs during their most recent appearance on MTV Unplugged. Aside from performing some of their trending tracks like Life Goes On, Telepathy, and Blue & Grey, the members also performed a cover of a famous song by Coldplay, Fix You.

They launched their set in a room where they played arcade games and sang
Be track “Telepathy,” which marked the first time the band has performed the upbeat song live. “Blue & Grey” was another song they premiered live for the first time. They changed settings to go along with the introspective ballad, performing the song against a sun-kissed backdrop, surrounded by greenery.
