Valeo buys German confectionary group Schluckwerder Updated / Tuesday, 12 Jan 2021 11:14 Schluckwerder was founded in 1956 and its products include the 175-year-old Lübecker marzipan brands Valeo Foods Group has agreed a deal to buy Schluckwerder Holding, the specialist producer of confectionery products in Germany and around the world, from German private equity firm Novum Capital.  Following today s deal, Valeo Foods said its annualised revenues will increase to about €1.2 billion. It said today s purchase will further consolidating its position as a major international food business across its three business units in the UK, Continental Europe and Ireland. The purchase of Schluckwerder will see revenues at Valeo Foods European business unit increase to about €283m. Its UK business unit has revenues of over €583m with a further €319m generated in Ireland.

The CapVest-owned food group has acquired Schluckwerder, maker of the 175-year-old ‘Lübecker marzipan’ brands Erasmi and Carstens, from mid-market private equity firm Novum Capital. Schluckwerder marzipan products are “produced using higher quality standards than other marzipan-based products” and have been distinguished by EU protected geographic designation status since 1996. The company also produces nougat, chocolate rings, fondant, crocante and praline treats popular with consumers across Germany. Additionally, Schluckwerder operates a private label business and counts leading German and international retailers among its customers.

Valeo boosts revenues with purchase of German sweet firm

Valeo Foods has bought German confectionery group Schluckwerder, bringing the Irish company’s annual revenues to more than €1.2bn. It is the second acquisition by Valeo in less than a month and its 18th since the company was founded 11 years ago. Valeo Foods was established in Ireland in 2010 as a portfolio business of CapVest Partners. It has expanded since then and now owns a range of high-profile brands such as Kettle crisps, Batchelors, Kelkin and Rowse. Schluckwerder operates three production facilities in northern Germany. Retailers including Lidl, Aldi and Netto form a core part of its business. More than 25pc of its products are sold outside Germany.
