Motion Passed by Tipperary Co Co Regarding Mother & Baby Home Scandal

Tipperary Mid West Radio At a special meeting on February 15th Tipperary County Council agreed to a number of actions: A working party has been established comprising the CEO, Joe McGrath, the Cathaoirleach, Cllr Michael Smith and Leas Cathaoirleach, Mary Hanna Hourigan, the county Archivist, Rachel Granville, Meetings Administrator, Ger Walsh and representatives from the Sean Ross Abbey Survivor Group – We Are Still Here would complete the working party. The council agreed to provide the group will full access to any records of meetings that the council had in respect of Sean Ross Abbey Home and to offer the services of the County Archivist to facilitate access to these documents.

Smith: Lessons have been learned from meeting with Mother and Baby Homes survivors

Tipp FM Photo: © Tipperary County Council The Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council has described this week’s meeting with Mother and Baby Home survivors as a pivotal moment. They were addressed by Teresa Collins among others – she was born at Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea in 1963. During the virtual meeting Councillors were told of the role they could play in the support of survivors. Cathaoirleach Michael Smith says the council has accepted that there were huge failings and apologised on its behalf. “But I also made a commitment that Tipperary County Council would deliver on the recommendations (from the Mother and Baby Homes Commissions report) and we would honour that.”

Teresa Collins is part of the Sean Ross Commemorative Committee and addressed yesterday’s virtual meeting of the local authority. She was one of over 6,000 children born in Sean Ross Abbey during it’s time as a Mother & Baby Home. Speaking on Tipp Today earlier Teresa said there was a positive outcome from the meeting. “Fair play, every one of them committed and each individually did apologise I’ll give them that.”
