Galway Bay fm newsroom – Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has told the Dáil he is “frustrated and embarrassed” by the lack of progress on a new emergency department at UHG.
The matter was raised in the chamber this afternoon by Galway West Deputy Catherine Connolly.
She told the Tanaiste that some of the updates being offered on the long-awaited project would require an advanced degree in English to make sense of.
She wanted a plain, easily understood answer on why there is such a lack of progress on the project.
She also sharply criticised a “public spat” between Fine Gael Senator Sean Kyne and Fine Gael Junior Minister Hildegarde Naughten over a new hospital earmarked for Merlin Park.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Seanad has heard a call for an urgent debate on a controversial new hospital earmarked for Merlin Park and the future of healthcare in Galway.
Until recently, the new unit was widely understood to be a full new elective hospital with 200 beds.
However, a recent high-level presentation on new hospitals in Galway, Dublin and Cork indicated it will be a day only facility with no inpatient beds.
Senator Sean Kyne claims this is several rungs below what was planned and barely above a minor injuries unit.
Addressing the Seanad, he suggested that the Saolta Hospital Group has even been limiting certain investment in UHG due to a preference for a full new hospital at Merlin Park.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Concerns are being raised that a long-discussed new elective hospital for Galway will fall “far short of what was planned”.
It follows a recent high-level presentation which focused on new ambulatory – or outpatient – elective only hospital facilities for Galway, Dublin and Cork.
The proposed hospital would be located on the grounds of Merlin Park and was until now widely understood to be a full new elective hospital.
It’s previously been touted as a 200 bed facility with 11 operating theatres that would cater to non-complex, short stay surgeries.
However, Senator Sean Kyne says the latest revelations indicate that it will be a day only facility with no inpatient beds.
