Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Monday 21 December 2020 – His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has turned the sod to construct the country’s first-ever Foreign Service Academy at the premises of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Freetown.
Deputy Director-General of Overseas Company of the China Railway Seventh Group, CRSG, Dong Xinagyang, said he was honoured to have been awarded the contract for the construction of the Service Academy, which he said was the 17th infrastructural development that his company would have done in the country.
He assured that CRSG would deliver the building on time and that quality service would be considered during the construction phase.
Sierra Leone Telegraph: 23 December 2020:
There is some consternation in Sierra Leone over news of the Chinese construction of a foreign service academy in Freetown to educate a privileged few. Many in Sierra Leone are saying that, if president Bio seriously believes in his manifesto promise to widen access to education and skills training for the greatest number of underprivileged in the country, then the construction of a foreign service academy to meet the needs of a few is seriously misplaced.
Is this just another white elephant to boost the ego of Sierra Leone’s political leaders?
Millions of young people are leaving school and college without an occupational skill, due to the lack of vocational skills training colleges in the country. Hence the construction of a foreign service academy at this time of Sierra Leone’s economic cycle is raising eyebrows.
