5.8 Additional American Households Report Not Having Enough to Eat
That was for the week ended Dec. 7 compared with early March, according to new data from the Census Bureau. It’s an increase of almost 30% from early March.
About half of the increase in food insecurity has come from households with children. Overall, about 21 million American adults live in households that sometimes don’t have enough to eat, while another 6.5 million live in households that often don’t have enough to eat.
Additionally, another 62 million American adults live in households that eat enough food, but not the kinds of food they would prefer. This group has grown by 19.3 million since the pandemic began, and includes many Americans who lost their jobs or had their pay cut and have been surviving by drawing down savings and building up credit card debt.
21% of Suburban and Rural Americans Are Considering Moving
That is as of November, according to a regular monthly survey conducted by Bank of America. In comparison, just 11% of urban residents plan to leave their current city.
Since Bank of America began their survey over the summer, suburban and rural Americans have become much more interested in moving, with the share considering a move rising to 49% by November from 29% in June. By contrast, urban residents have been much less likely to want to leave their homes, with about two-thirds saying they want to stay where they are.
Early on in the pandemic, there was a concern that many people would leave cities for the hinterlands to escape the risk of disease and to take advantage of new remote working opportunities. The Bank of America survey, however, suggests that “the ‘urban exodus’ thesis is little more than ‘urban legend,’” as they put it, especially now that vaccinations are beginning.
