The burial took place last evening at around 7 PM where scores of people flocked to pay their last respects to the late Senior Chief Mbenje who died in Lilongwe Wednesday morning after succumbing to Covid-19. Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje, Gladys Ganda, said the area has lost a leader with high integrity who had the welfare of his subjects at heart by championing development without greed.

The deaths followed a cabinet meeting and other gatherings attended by politicians over the Christmas period, but officials did not say where the victims were infected. Local Government Minister Lingson Berekanyama and Transport Minister Sidik Mia both succumbed to the disease in the early hours of Tuesday, the government spokesman said. They were senior members of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), the main partner in an alliance that unseated ex-leader Peter Mutharika in a second round election in June last year, delivering victory to President Lazarus Chakwera. Mia had been tipped as a possible successor to Chakwera.

Government closes campuses amid COVID’s second wave Malawi universities and colleges have been closed for three weeks, following a second wave of COVID-19 that has taken a heavy toll, with daily reports of increasing infections and deaths. This includes two cabinet ministers who died earlier this month – Transport and Public Works Minister Sidik Mia and Local Government Minister Lingson Belekanyama. The pandemic has also been ripping through universities and colleges that were reopened in September after being closed under a national lockdown since COVID-19 hit the country last March. Mzuzu University, in northern Malawi, is one institution that has taken a major hit, with two forest faculty teachers dying from the disease, senior lecturer Dominic Gondwe and Professor Chimuleke Munthali.
