Seattle sucks at keeping the interesting ice cream in town, but with a new crop that opened during the pandemic, the outlook for this summer seems pretty sweet. One after another, the most creative, unique, and freshest shops seem to close up as fast as they opened. In recent years Kurt Farm, Sweet Lo’s, Sweet Bumpas, Lick, Central District, and Seattle Freeze all hung up their scoops or packed them for greener pastures – possibly literally: is it Seattle’s rain that drives them away?
Iowa Nice rears its oxymoronic head again.
Since I left Iowa in 1999, I’ve had to explain multiple times that Iowa Nice doesn’t mean what outsiders think it does. The term is most commonly understood to convey the general kindness and helpfulness that hardworking, noble Iowans show complete strangers. Famous Iowans, such as Johnny Carson, Dan Gable, Norman Borlaug and Donna Reed, reinforced the Iowa Nice stereotype with their genuine warmth and selflessness in their public personas.
However, Iowa Nice has a couple of caveats that are politely omitted. This definition fails to mention that Iowa Nice only applies to conflict-avoidant and submissive white people. If you exhibit anything less than those characteristics, you may literally fear for your life.
Seattle Remains in Phase 2, But What s Next?
The entire state is in a reopening pause. The next stage of our recovery is less clear.

On Thursday, Washington governor Jay Inslee announced a pause of the state s reopening, meaning every region will remain in Phase 2 of the âHealthy WashingtonâRoadmap to Recoveryâ plan for the foreseeable future. At the same time, he didn t release any information on Phase 3, giving us no new activities to dream about as we shiver on patios or stare down empty indoor tables at restaurants.
