Dame Evelyn Glennie, who is originally from Methlick, near Ellon, is the world’s premier solo percussionist. She has today been announced as ambassador for Sistema Scotland, and will play an important role in promoting the charity’s Big Noise programme in Torry, Dundee, Glasgow and Stirling.

Big Noise Govanhill to host virtual Christmas event tonight MUSIC charity Big Noise Govanhill has announced plans for a virtual Christmas event. The event, which takes place tonight at 6pm on the Big Noise Govanhill Facebook page, will showcase music and performances from kids and teenagers who take part in the group. Elanor Gunn, team leader for Big Noise Govanhill, said: Our children and young people have worked so hard to keep practising their instruments and improve their musical skills, often in very difficult circumstances. Independent evaluation by the Glasgow Centre for Population Health shows that taking part in Big Noise helps children and young people to increase their creativity, determination and self-belief.

A musical project which works to transform the lives of north-east children has delivered more than 1,700 online lessons since April. Big Noise Torry has been a positive influence on the lives of kids in the area since 2015. The life-changing programme, which celebrated its fifth birthday in July, helps young children learn to play musical instruments from an early age. There is normally an annual Christmas concert but organisers could not hold it this year due to the pandemic.
