Ode to a Black Man: The Dirtbombs Ultraglide in Black at 20

Maybe the world wasn t ready for the Gories. During the Detroit rock n roll trio s initial run, their shows were famously low on attendance until the band was near their final breaking point. Though a brilliantly filthy garage band whose influence continues to be felt in the beer-soaked subgenre, the six years the Gories had performed between the late- 80s and early- 90s were nearly a dead zone for their style in terms of widespread popularity. Song Of The Week — Leave The Light On By Andrea Gillis

Song Of The Week — Leave The Light On By Andrea Gillis Marc Pinansky “Leave the Light On” is Andrea Gillis’ introduction to Red on Red Records, a local indie label founded by fellow artist Justine Covault. The single, released Apr. 6, has an 80s flair with a modern twist. Gillis, based in Boston, says she was inspired by artists like Kim Wilde, the Eurythmics, the Pretenders and Tina Turner in her comeback years. Wanting to channel the joy that these artists brought her in childhood, Gillis worked with her husband, Marc Pinansky, and recorded the track in their basement, along with some vocal accompaniment from their five-year-old son. The result is an infectious dance track about coming out of a depression.

Brixton riots 40 years on: From policing to inequality, residents say progress slipping away

Brixton riots 40 years on: From policing to inequality, residents say ‘progress slipping away’ Nadine White © Provided by The Independent On an April day in 1981, local anger at entrenched racism and police mistreatment erupted onto the streets of south London. It was Thatcher’s Britain, and social inequality was growing, with soaring unemployment rates among Black Britons. The already iconic neighbourhood of Brixton has, in the 40 years since, become synonymous with the riots that followed, a moment which caused the powers-that-be to finally ask questions of themselves about policing, racism and identity. While undoubtedly a watershed moment in the movement for race equality in Brixton – the Scarman report, produced in November of same year to examine the riot, acknowledged for the first time the discriminatory policing of Black people – 40 years later, and many locals are still questioning what has changed.
