Gail Simone marks her long-heralded return to
Red Sonja, once more joined by frequent collaborator Walter Geovani (
Clean Room,
Death-Defying Devil). Her universally acclaimed and fan-favorite run starting in 2013 brought the character to new heights of popularity and recognition, and made daring tweaks to the lore for modern audiences. Her pivotal contributions lead to her close involvement consulting on the upcoming blockbuster film, directed by Joey Soloway and recently announced to star actress Hannah John-Kamen. In this new tale, Gail spins a web spanning the entirety of Sonja’s life, presenting a coda to her take on the character.

The Sonjaversal series continues to frustrate in a lot of ways, especially since I keep seeing so much potential for it. Hastings has a good concept here that was marred by a really rough start and then giving us a confusing series of events. Further issues, like this one, expands on things in a way that helps but it also just lacks a cohesive feeling that makes you really want to stick with it when it gets too verbose. What helps is that Pasquale Qualano has some great designs for pretty much all of the Sonja’s we get as well as the locations. The fight sequence
