Amid calls to stay home during the early weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic, Rodgers Mathebulo’s house was demolished, his belongings looted, and the small shack from which he sold fruit, sweets, and snacks flattened. Unfortunately, Mathebulo’s experience is not unique. In fact, he is just one of hundreds of people who were evicted over two days in April 2020 by a brutally efficient South African private security company: Red Ant Security Relocation and Eviction Services.

The high court in Johannesburg has ordered that a group of people who “hijacked” a multimillion-rand vacant house in Dunkeld West were unlawfully evicted and can return to stay there, for now.
Non-profit human rights lawyers the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (Seri) took the case of the house invaders - about 50 of whom were evicted by the Red Ants on April 6, leaving their property on the pavement - to court.

The High Court in Johannesburg has ruled the removal of illegal occupants of a multimillion-rand vacant house in Dunkeld West as unlawful.

The court on Friday ordered the occupants to be allowed back on the premises.
The matter was taken to court by the Non-profit human rights lawyers of the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (Seri) last week.
Seri s Khuselwa Dyantyi says the owner of the house has blocked the entrance of the property with bricks.

JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng Human settlements MEC Lebogang Maile has apologised to a family in Tshwane after their house was unlawfully demolished by the Red Ants.
The Mhlala family was left homeless in 2017 when the City of Tshwane ordered that the property in Atteridgeville be destroyed.
