Posted: Apr 27, 2021 10:09 AM Posted By: Ricardo Tovar REDDING, Calif.- The Shasta County Coroner s Office has identified the man killed in a motorcycle crash on April, 22 as Sammy Ray Hartzog, 59, of Millville. Around 4:30 p.m. a Deputy Coroner Investigator was sent to Railroad Avenue near Eugenia to investigate a fatal motorcycle versus vehicle collision. Hartzog was pronounced dead by emergency personnel upon their arrival.  This is an ongoing investigation by the Redding Police Department.

Police: Man stabbed after attempting to break into Redding home Redding police are investigating a stabbing during a suspected home invasion in the 2200 block of Venus Way on Thursday evening, authorities said. Officers were dispatched to the Venus Way address around 6 p.m. for a report of a man trying to force his way into a home. Christian Phelps, 19, of Redding, told police that he stabbed the intruder, who was later identified as Charles Benson Jr., 27, of Redding, investigators said. Benson left the house in a vehicle and was later located several blocks away by a California Highway Patrol officer.

Mental health crisis response team set to hit the streets in May

A team of two law enforcement officers paired with one mental health clinician will hit the streets next month in an effort to more appropriately handle people who are at the breaking point, Redding Police Chief Bill Schueller told the Redding City Council at their meeting this week. The pilot project is a first for Shasta County and is intended to calm tense situations, reduce the need for use of deadly force on the part of law enforcement officials and get mental health help to people who need it. Last year, there were 900 law enforcement calls involving someone in a mental health crisis, or nearly three a day, Schueller said.

Armed person dies in officer-involved shooting in Redding REDDING, Calif. – An armed person died in an officer-involved shooting after the suspect discharged several rounds, Redding Police Department said. The police department determined the location of a stolen vehicle in downtown Redding at about 1 p.m. on Tuesday, police said. SIGN UP:  The vehicle was located by officers as the pickup was driving recklessly on Grange Street. Officers initiated a pursuit when the suspect refused to yield to the police. The suspect sped off southbound on Polk Street and turned westbound onto Ellis Street. The suspect continued to drive recklessly after police ended the pursuit for the safety of the public. The vehicle continued on State Route 273 when it collided with a passenger car traveling northbound. The three people in the vehicle were not injured.
