Firefighter burned in Silverado Fire released from hospital After his release, Dylan Van Iwaarden will undergo rehabilitation at the University of California Irvine Medical Center. KABC SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) An Orange County Fire Authority firefighter who was severely burned in the Silverado Fire back in October was released from the hospital Wednesday. Dylan Van Iwaarden was placed in a medically-induced coma, spent 114 days in the burn unit and underwent 17 surgeries after he suffered burns to over 65% of his body. He is set to undergo rehabilitation at the University of California Irvine Medical Center. A crew of eight, including Van Iwaarden, was setting backfires to burn up fuel and create a buffer against the advancing flames when a second fire ignited below them. The crew was overrun and had no time to deploy portable fire shelters.

By City News Service Feb 18, 2021 SANTA ANA (CNS) - One of two Orange County firefighters critically injured during the Silverado Fire near Irvine in October was released from a hospital today. Dylan Van Iwaarden spent 114 days in the OC Burn Center at OC Global Medical Center in Santa Ana. Van Iwaarden, 26, and fellow firefighter Phi Le, 31, were critically injured Oct. 26 while setting backfires to slow the spread of the blaze, which blackened 12,466 acres. Van Iwaarden underwent 17 surgeries and was placed in a medically induced coma and intubated at one point, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. He will now begin rehabilitation at UC Irvine Medical Center.
