18:42 | Lima, Jun. 14. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on Monday called for respect and calm in Peru, expressing concern about the harassment against representatives of the country s electoral bodies. I call for reflection, calm, and respect for democratic values of non-discrimination, as well as for the defense of human rights, which are all essential for coexistence in a society as rich and plural as Peru, the former Chilean President pointed out.
Bachelet lamented that several electoral authorities have faced (verbal) attacks after April 11 elections. This can negatively affect the process, she said. Electoral bodies and the decisions they make must be respected and accepted. If the rules of democracy are not accepted before, during, and after elections, social cohesion can break dangerously, she warned.
