In its text, President Biden’s
American Jobs Plan calls for investments in roads and bridges, public transportation, research and development, improved caregiving for aging and disabled Americans, and the construction of new public schools and buildings among other investments.
But read between the lines, and the plan does a lot more. It restores dignity to and empowers regular, working-class Americans. It makes a statement – perhaps for the first time – that people of color, who often are euphemistically referred to in the media as “lower-income families,” are worthy of our attention, respect, and investment.
Systemic racial injustices have led to disproportionate environmental burdens for communities of color and the poor. And the same emissions that harm our health are changing the climate. These converging crises call on each of us to pool our collective resources, energy, and ingenuity to innovate for justice.

Albany, NY) Today, the Senate Majority will pass its one-house budget resolution that delivers emergency aid to help New York recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and invests in a brighter, more equitable future by fully funding essential services and putting more money in the pockets of working and middle-class families. The Senate resolution increases total school aid by $5.7 billion, provides billions in residential and commercial rental and foreclosure assistance, restores critical funding to our health care system, and jumpstarts our economy with investments in transportation and small businesses. The Senate Majority’s proposal asks the wealthiest New Yorkers to pay their fair share rather than balancing the budget on the backs of working families.
And they
want you to forget.
I mean the people responsible – no, not for the weather but for the mismanaged response before, during, and after last week s winter storm catastrophe. That includes ERCOT and the energy providers who failed to adequately upgrade and winterize their equipment despite experience with a similar storm in 2011. And it includes the people running the government who show very little interest in actual governance, and have indeed actively campaigned on the promise of minimal government.
Today (Thursday, Feb. 25), the Texas House of Representatives Committee on State Affairs and Energy Resources will hold a joint public meeting to receive testimony on the statewide electrical blackouts; the response by the energy industry; and what changes are needed to avoid another energy crisis.
