Luke Harding of  The Guardian on Thursday came out with a new story that looks at first glance like an attempt to rescue the Russiagate story and the reputations of Harding and U.S. intelligence. The headline reads, “Kremlin papers appear to show Putin’s plot to put Trump in White House”  with the subhead: “Exclusive: Documents suggest Russia launched secret multi-agency effort to interfere in US democracy.” Harding’s report says that during a Jan. 22, 2016 closed session of the Russian national security council, President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian spies to back a “mentally unstable” Donald Trump for the White House to “help secure Moscow’s strategic objectives, among them ‘social turmoil’ in the US.”
