The focus in the flocks is to utilise green grazing or in-bye land at key time frames, while maximising the duration of time ewes spend on hill grazing.
Nearly all of the Teagasc BETTER Farm hill sheep flocks have finished pregnancy scanning in the past couple of weeks and overall the scanning rates and litter sizes are quite good, as presented in Table 1.
Pregnancy scanning is a very important management tool for all sheep farmers and this is the case for hill sheep farmers as much as lowland sheep farmers.
By knowing the litter size, it allows for singles and twins to be divided and managed separately, but it also can identify problems with pregnancy rates, particularly if the problem occurs over a number of years.
RICHMOND â As if caring for five horses isnât enough work, Richmond veterinarian Amanda Burbank, her husband Casey and daughters Maizey and Ashlynn just rescued two more.
The two ex-racehorses, one a thoroughbred and the second a standardbred, are registered under the names âPink Performanceâ and âJaclyn Doodles.â The Burbank family has nicknamed them Pinkie and Jackie.
Both horses ended up in the kill pen at a horse auction in New Holland, Pennsylvania, which meant they would be loaded into a large truck with other horses and driven to an equine slaughterhouse in Canada. Horse slaughter is no longer legal in the United States, but American horses are still slaughtered in Canada and Mexico.

Out of action since having leg surgery in mid-November, Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano is set to launch his comeback Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.
Castellano, 43, is named aboard Jacks or Better Farm s 3-year-old homebred Sexy Dream, a half-sister to multiple graded-stakes winning millionaire Jackson Bend, in Race 9, a starter/optional claimer for 3-year-old fillies going one mile on the grass.
Trained by Ralph Nicks, Sexy Dream will break from Post 10 in a field of 11. Castellano is represented by agent John Panagot.
“I m really excited and looking forward to it,” Castellano said. “It s the first time that I ve been off for so long, three months, but I m ready to go. I feel 100 percent and I m ready to get back to work.”
