This one’s not too much of a thinker. The Oregon Zoo has posted a video of three of its rescued river otters in the heat of play. (We first found the video over at
Laughing Squid.) If you like otters, and you don’t have any particular issue with ice cubes, you’ll enjoy the show.
The otters in question go by the names Tilly, Flora, and Hobson. Though, now that I give it some thought, I don’t know if otters are capable of name recognition. Dogs are, of course; and a couple years back, new studies suggested that cats know, but simply don’t care about, their own names. But otters? Cursory internet searches prove unhelpful. Now this will haunt me until the day I die. Or until the day I successfully grab an otter’s attention by shouting, “Hey, Sal!”

Even under normal circumstances we all need to mentally get away sometimes. Of course, none of us have been living under anything close to normal for more than a year. So we can really use a little break from the stress of everyday life at the moment. We’ve tried by watching a million movies and TV shows. As well as by reading, playing games, or doing other hobbies a million times. We’ve even tried closing our eyes and visualizing a far away place. But now there’s even easier, more beautiful way to transport somewhere else. Take a journey to the edge of the world by losing yourself in this relaxing ultra high definition two hour ambient video tour of Antarctica.

Men Without Hats made it very clear in 1982: you can, in fact, dance if you want to. Heck, you can even leave your non-dancing friends behind. What kind of friends are they anyway if they won’t get groovy with you? However, the Canadian synth-pop rockers never said anything about dancing to a dulcimer. As best as we can tell, they never mentioned anything about playing or even listening to a dulcimer. But we don’t need their permission to enjoy this twangy folk-rock cover of their hit song “The Safety Dance.”
It leaves the real version far behind, but it keeps all of the original song’s fun.

If you occupy one of several specific corners of modern society, you may regularly find yourself discussing Kurt Cobain. The Nirvana bandleader has breached widespread discussion a good deal lately. You may have caught Kid Cudi’s tribute to the late artist on a recent episode of
Saturday Night Live, for instance; and the news of Dave Grohl’s forthcoming memoir no doubt ignited hope of yet unheard stories about Cobain backstage. Well, if you’re already in a Nirvana-centric mindset, you may enjoy this cheeky cover of their (arguably) most famous song.
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain put a crisp new spin on “Smells Like Teen Spirit” a few years back; the tune marks one of many rock and pop hits that the group has rendered anew with their trademark sound. We caught sight of the cover by way of

There are lots of things we’ve all done to pass the time during quarantine. That doesn’t mean we’ll ever do them again when things (hopefully) return to normal. Sure, making sourdough was okay when we had nothing else to do. But it’s a time-consuming pain in the a normally. We’ll stick to buying it from our local bakery in the future. However, there are some hobbies that should stick in a post-COVID world. Like the delightful way one Canadian dad and his kids have managed to inject some excitement into pandemic life. They’ve been hosting their own little demolition derbies using toy cars.
